Getting Started with Basic Electronics

If you are looking forward to learn basic electronics, then you are at the right place. In this section we will be learning all the basic electronics stuff to get easily started with electronics.

While trying to build a circuit on your own, you might have come across various terms like voltage, current, resistance etc. But many of us still confused to understanding these terms.

That is why we are going to discuss these various terms today, in order to get started with basic electronics. Voltage, Current and Resistance are the heart and soul of any electronics circuit. In order build full functional circuit we need to take care of each of these things.

Voltage: It is electric potential difference between two points

Current: It is the rate of flow of charge

Resistance: It is the opposition to the flow of current

Don’t worry if you have not understood these scientific definitions. Here is simpler explanation for these terms. Consider a pipe in which water is continuously flowing. The amount flow of water could be assumed equivalent to the flow of charge which is known as Current. But pipe has a clog at some point. Then the pressure of the water on one side the pipe will be higher than the other side of the clog because only little water can flow through the clog. The difference between the pressures on both side of the clog is nothing but the potential difference, which is equivalent to the voltage in an electronics circuit. The clog is acting as a resistance to the flow of water which can be assumed equivalent to the electric resistance.

Voltage is measured in Volts (V).

Current is measured in Ampere (A).

Resistance is measured in Ohm (Ω).

Here is an self explanatory picture of these terms.



Let us create a simple circuit and understand these concepts practically. You will be needing following material for that.

Breadboard, 9V battery, 1K Ω Resistor, LED, connectors and Multimeter.


Step 1: 

Bring the two terminals of battery on the bread board.

Step 2:

Connect the one terminal of resistor to the positive terminal of battery and other terminal to the longer leg of LED.

Step 3:

The circuit will be working only when it is a closed circuit. But one terminal of LED and one terminal of Battery are still unconnected. Connect the shorter leg of LED to the negative terminal of battery.

LED should glow now.

Congratulations! You have successfully built your first basic electronics circuit on breadboard.

To have more  fun change the resistors with different values like 10kΩ, 470Ω, 220Ω, 100Ω etc. and observe the changes in output.

Let us understand where the terms Voltage, Resistance and Current are available in this circuit.

  1. Voltage: The battery is having the rating of 9V. This means that the difference between the two terminals of battery is 9V. In order to measure it practically take out the multimeter. Set it to DC voltage. Connect red wire of multimeter to the positive terminal of battery and black wire to the negative terminal of battery. You should see 9V reading on multimeter.
  2. Current: In order to measure current in circuit connect one terminal of multimeter to shorter leg of LED and other terminal to remaining black terminal of battery.
  3. Resistance: To measure resistance set the multimeter to ohm. Connect one terminal of resistor to the one terminal of multimeter and same the remaining terminal of resistor to the remaining terminal of multimeter.

Take reading for above parameters. We will be discussing about these parameter values in deep in further sessions.
